National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day: Don’t Let Age Force You Back into the Closet

February 7th was designated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, and the theme for this year’s observance was Together for Love: Stop HIV Stigma. With this in mind, LGBTQ Program Manager Arthur Fitting, from the not-for-profit VNS Health, sat down with Aundaray Guess, Deputy Director at GRIOT Circle, a community-based, multi-generational organization serving LGBTQ elders of color in the Greater New York area, for a discussion about Aging and HIV/AIDS in the Black Community. LGBT Cultural Competency Training

VNS Health clinicians, administrative and senior staff have received training on working with LGBT communities from the LGBT senior advocacy organization SAGE, ensuring that all of our staff are aware of and sensitive to the needs and concerns of LGBT older adults. In fact, VNSNY is the largest home- and community-based health care organization in the New York City metropolitan area with the SAGECare Platinum level LGBT cultural competency credential. SAGE is the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults.
